Musings: One weekend trip became decades

As a New Jersey native, I considered the Jersey Shore a natural summer destination. I discovered the Hamptons, however, when a friend at Cornell University invited me for the weekend to his family’s home in Montauk.
After spending part of my weekend nights amid the social atmosphere in Amagansett and East Hampton, I realized these would make worthy summer destinations.
Five years later, I organized share houses with friends in East Hampton. Then I rented a home year-round to see if I’d use it in winter. That, it turned out, was a good plan. I lucked into buying a home in foreclosure in Springs 40 years ago. Not only was it a welcome lifestyle choice, but the real estate investment paid off well, too.
Eventually, technology caught up with my setup, allowing me to work from home for my bond business and real estate marketing.
I tell people that whatever is left of my sanity is maintained by my home overlooking Gardiners Bay. Serenity now.
