In "Faith issues don't belong in discourse" [Letters, May 14], the writers end their letter with, "Keep religion out of public discourse."

Is it possible that they don't remember the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.? I wonder what would have happened to his faith-inspired civil rights movement if he had followed this advice.

May I offer another command: Don't shut out religion from public discourse. The United States would lose part of its character.
