Gilgo Beach finding creates false security

So, it's not her ["No match for missing woman," News, Dec. 17]. One of the four bodies found on Gilgo Beach was not that of a woman believed to be a prostitute.
With this revelation, we have lost the false sense of security that this was a woman who put herself in harm's way.
How discomforting of Police Commissioner Richard Dormer to say, "Don't worry about this." Is he serious? An estimated one in four women is a victim of rape or attempted rape, and only 37 percent of rapes are reported. Females need to take responsibility for their safety and become aware of the risks.
We talk about Internet safety, but what about the physical safety walking down the street, at the mall or on campus?
There are many simple, effective safety and defense measures all females can learn. Let's at least empower our girls with them, before they head out into this not-so-safe world, because the truth is, it's not just the prostitutes being targeted.
