Scooter age claim misses state law
I am concerned about the review of the Gyroor C1Plus electric scooter [“Gear Watch: Gyroor C1Plus 1,000-watt electric scooter,” exploreLI, July 7]. It says that the scooter is intended for riders “age 12 and up,” citing the manufacturer’s specifications.
While that may be the manufacturer’s recommendation, it is important to note that this does not necessarily reflect the law. In New York State, for example, riders must comply with state regulations governing electric bicycles and electric scooters, including minimum age requirements. Operators must be at least 16.
In Nassau County, helmets are mandatory for riders
younger than 18. In Suffolk County, all e-scooter and e-bike riders must wear helmets.
Parents should always check their state and local laws regarding age restrictions and where these vehicles may be operated.
As an employee of the New York Coalition for Transportation Safety focused on pedestrian and bike safety, I suggest providing this clarification in future reviews to ensure that consumers receive complete and accurate information before purchasing or allowing a child to ride one of these vehicles.

Adventure park mars beach charm
As a lifelong Jones Beach patron and Wantagh resident, I wholeheartedly agree with the reader who wrote that the WildPlay outdoor adventure course at Field 4 is a “monstrosity . . . ugly, and out of place” [“Bring pitch-and-putt golf back to beach,” Letters, July 7].
I would go further: It is an ultimate eyesore compared to the beautiful buildings that Jones Beach continues to preserve. Robert Moses designed the park with a cohesive, elegant vision meant to feel like an ocean liner, not an amusement park. Take a walk, take a look, and enjoy the history and scenery.
Unfortunately, the pitch-and-putt golf course was damaged over the years and finally shut down for good after Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. It was a low-key pastime for generations of families.
