Even better than spending cuts to get America’s financial house in order are pain-free, popular ideas that enhance revenue.

One such idea would be making Presidents Day a floating holiday that would be held the day after the Super Bowl. This would eliminate “Super Sick Monday,” widely considered the least productive workday of the year, costing U.S. businesses nearly $3 billion in lost productivity.

If we’re going to take the $36 trillion national debt seriously, let’s encourage a nationwide Department of Government Efficiency incentive program that perhaps could be called “The 1% Rule.” This plan would mandate that any U.S. citizen who offers a cost-saving or revenue-enhancing idea that is enacted would receive a one-time, 1% commission off the economic impact of that idea.

If the floating Presidents Day holiday, for example, saved the country at least $100 million, that idea would generate a $1 million commission. Of course, determining who originates an idea would need to be solid.

Imagine how this inaugural revenue-enhancing suggestion could fire up America’s imagination to come up with innovative ways to help balance the federal budget and lower the national debt.
