Kids' home day care, Attorney General Pam Bondi's testimony

I know kids’ home care is lacking
As a retired regulator with the state Bureau of Early Childhood Education Services, I strongly agree with Todd Pittinsky’s conclusions that expanding home day care is misguided and compromises the quality of education and safety of the children [“A ‘progressive’ child care plan that’s regressive,” Opinion, Feb. 5].
I have seen firsthand through inspections that commercial day care centers and public schools provide a better quality education and safety than do homes.
Commercial day care centers have structured controls, such as monitoring workers, a director, admissions, and screening staff for training and experience. Homes lack these controls, making it difficult to monitor entry, visitors, and family dynamics, and ensure a good educational experience for the children.
The government prioritized creating jobs for stay-at-home mothers over the quality of day care. It would have been better to have public schools include day care services to ensure quality and safety; or commercial for-profit day care centers. Private homes provide the least safe and the most inequitable quality of care.
Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan for home care sounds good, but it is poorly designed, simplistic, and contrary to the research and experience of regulators in the field.

Bondi’s behavior insults our country
Kudos to Attorney General Pam Bondi for being disrespectful, insulting, obnoxious, hateful, and aggressive at her congressional hearing “AG Bondi, Dems clash at hearing on handling of Epstein files,” News, Feb. 12].
Bondi resorted to name-calling and wasting much of the Democrats’ allotted time with nonsensical nonresponses. Did she properly answer a single question a Democrat asked? Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan simply allowed her to spew lies.
Bondi’s actions are bigger than the price of eggs, the cost of housing, or even the border.
