Letter: Abortion deserves more discussion

A recent letter said those who object to abortion shouldn't have one, and it would be more beneficial to concentrate on issues affecting everyone, including "improving our infrastructure" ["Abortion comes up for re-debate," July 24].
Really? If someone destroyed a gestating giraffe, there would be outrage. A baby whale floundering near the Sound or a dog suffering from neglect elicits cries of indignation and tears of grief. How much stronger the reaction should be for the death of a pre-born human, who has the potential to thrive, the ability to create other human beings, and perhaps even the drive to transform the world?
As Newsday Opinion columnist Lane Filler said, "If I had to guess what the history textbooks of 2113 will describe as the murderous tragedy of our age, I'd bet on abortions performed after the fetus is recognizably human" ["Abortion is not the real problem," Opinion, July 17].
We are sad and hopeless creatures, akin to cannibals, destroying ourselves. And every one of us is responsible, especially if we feel the outrage, yet never utter a word.
