Grim news regarding the prevalence of autism continues to make big headlines ["Keep effort going to unravel autism," Editorial, April 2]. It is jarring and heartbreaking.

However, we must remember that autism is not specifically a childhood disorder. My 12-year-old with autism is as autistic today as he was at 3. Autism is mostly diagnosed in early childhood, but it is a lifelong disorder that creates incredible burdens on families living with it every day.

Early diagnosis and intervention are key to the most favorable outcomes possible, but special education and related services such as speech and occupational therapy will not cure autism. We must find and fund services and stronger support systems for individuals with this disability well into their adult years.
