I write on behalf of a working group of New York State health and environmental advocates. We have been meeting with our legislators and asking them to push the pause button on permitting high-volume hydraulic fracturing, so that New York can fully examine the health impacts and associated costs ["NY fracking decision may hinge on results of Pa. study," News, March 9].
Our legislators are responding to our concerns and those of the medical community. Bills were introduced in the New York State Assembly and Senate to establish a two-year moratorium and require the state to wait for critical health studies to be completed before a decision is made on hydrofracking.
The Assembly bill passed overwhelmingly. We commend our elected leaders for their responsible decision.
However, the well-being of our citizens is not assured until companion bills are passed in both chambers and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signs the legislation into law.
