Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano's claim not to have raised taxes is ridiculous ["Nassau exec campaign 2013," News, Sept. 4]. Instead, he has instituted extortionate fees for public services.

I was recently charged $1,299 after a 911 call for a medical emergency. The services consisted of having my blood pressure checked and being driven in an ambulance a few blocks to the hospital. This was billed as "advanced life support." In fact, it became clear that there was nothing wrong with me, and no reason to visit the hospital.

Insurance pays $180 of this extortionate county fee, and I am stuck with the rest. I later learned that if I had refused transport, the charge would have only been $100.

The public should think carefully before dialing 911 in Nassau County. Many people cannot afford to do so.
