Regarding "Reassess means reset for Nassau" [News column, May 28], all of columnist Joye Brown's suggestions will not stop property owners or the attorneys. The lawyers approach businesses and homeowners to challenge their assessments with nothing-to-lose propositions.

An assessment appeal can only go two ways: down or no change.

If appealed assessments could go up as well as down, then perhaps the homeowner and business owner would think twice. Also, attorneys would be more selective about which properties they appeal.

Currently appealing is a no-brainer, you lose more by not filing than by filing.
