Autism is an epidemic in America today and it demands an urgent and appropriate response ["Keep effort going to unravel autism," Opinion, April 2].

Efforts to date by both the public and private sector are not enough. In addition to more research, we need more providers who can diagnose children early. We need many more therapists and teachers who can treat children. We need broader insurance coverage to help families pay for these critical interventions. And equally as important, these children are becoming adults, and we need to provide them the services and opportunities they need and deserve.

Millions of individuals and families are struggling every day with autism. The societal costs are tremendous -- and growing. It's time to develop a national action plan to fight this public health emergency in earnest.
