In response to “Concerns about automatic braking” [Letters, March 9], what is wrong with “liberal thinking” to make our automobiles safer?

Based on the letter writer’s rationale, someone should be able to purchase a car without air bags or seat belts because that would make the vehicle cheaper. But what about safety? What you trade off on a cheaper car, you pay for in insurance premiums.

Having to share the highways of Long Island with individuals texting while driving, vehicles weighing 2,000 to 4,000 pounds and moving at 50 to 70 mph, I’m grateful that we have these safety features in place and mandated by the so-called liberal government.

I don’t mind paying the extra money for the sake of saving a life.
