It’s about time! I was glad that the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has finally retired its elephants [“Ringling Bros. elephants perform their last show,” News, May 2].

Although many people enjoyed watching the elephants perform, our entertainment was made possible only by their suffering. These elephants traveled thousands of miles in cramped trains cars and were forced to perform at hundreds of shows. These gentle giants have earned their right to retire.

The Humane Society of the United States should continue its fight until all U.S. circuses ban elephants from their shows.
