The Olympic Games were once an amateur competition. I disagree with professionals participating.

These young athletes have spent their lives preparing for the opportunity to compete. They should not have to share the spotlight with someone like Serena Williams, for example [“Serena at fault in shocking loss,” Sports, Aug. 10]. In basketball, golf and tennis we’ve watched these pros in venues where fans have paid high ticket prices. Let the true amateurs get their shot.
