Better diet, not medication, should be considered for children with cholesterol problems, writes Debbie Persampire. Credit: iStockPhoto

I find it offensive that there is interest in testing the cholesterol of children, only to put them on medication ["Doctors debate cholesterol testing for kids," News, July 23].

Why is there no mention of changing a child's diet instead? What kind of world do we live in when the only solution we see to help our sick children is medication? What about the long-term side effects?

If we are going to begin testing a child's cholesterol, then we should also look into ways to educate families so that they can change the ways they eat and improve the health of everyone.
