Letter: Better ways to celebrate MLK Jr.

I believe that Martin Luther King Jr. would not have felt honored by a day in which the educational community slept late, played video games, went shopping, or lounged around the house and watched TV ["MLK holiday was hard-won," Editorial, Jan. 21].
He would have wanted a day in the classroom where a reading of his "I Have a Dream" speech would be followed by a review of his life. Also appropriate would be a discussion of how students believe a 2013 United States would look if King's life had not been cut short by an assassin's bullet, and a forum of race relations past and present, the hope for the future and how to get there.
A productive day in his name, rather than a thoughtless day of leisure, would truly pay homage to the price he paid for equality.
