Letter: Cash woes for arts center

I read with dismay the comments of Great Neck Village Mayor Ralph Kreitzman and Saddle Rock Mayor Dan Levy, who were attempting to justify dropping their villages' already negligible support of the Great Neck Arts Center ["Arts center faces drama," News, Feb. 10].
The most any village is contributing is $2,500 annually, a drop in the budget bucket, and the arts center provides lessons and experiences not available elsewhere on the peninsula. The center's value has been acknowledged by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which named it a partner in education in 2000. Local support is small, but key for obtaining grants.
I thank the mayor of my village, Great Neck Plaza, Jean Celender, for not joining in this defection and for demonstrating consistent support for the arts in an area with a long, rich cultural history.
