Encouragement of greed is the wrong way to go.

The Dec. 2 news story “Judge orders Suffolk, Brookhaven to review Medford casino plan” reviews the Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corp.’s plans to install up to 1,000 slot machines in a 90,500-foot facility in Medford. Those plans illustrate the escalation of the means to greed. Greed is at the root of most of the world’s problems. Not everyone will patronize the casino, but the overall effect will be detrimental to the general population.

The court ordered a review and possible approval of the casino, saying it was critical to Suffolk OTB’s efforts to adjust its debts and emerge from bankruptcy. Improving the financial health of OTB should not justify harming the public. Likewise, fostering gambling for the sake of increasing the state’s resources constitutes a perverted means of accomplishing that goal.
