Letter: Clean up and reuse Grumman land

Where is Albany on the issue of cleaning up the former U.S. Navy-Grumman site ["Sen.: Navy should pay Bethpage for cleanup," News, Oct. 12]? The state Department of Environmental Conservation has procrastinated over the cleanup for 25 years. The lunar module was designed, built and made operational in less than half the time.
Over the years, under the direction of the DEC, millions of dollars have been spent and have not resolved the cleanup or provided Long Islanders with jobs.
Isn't it time that Albany or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provides leadership? Perhaps a public-private cooperative effort among the Navy, Northrop Grumman and local universities would be possible to advance solutions and expedite cleanups of these toxic sites.
