With all the talk about a second track from Farmingdale to Ronkonkoma, which I am for, has anyone considered including a bike and pedestrian path along the right of way ["Tracking down federal funds," News, Sept. 16]?

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit in California has a "rails with trails" project under consideration to create a trail alongside its commuter rail that would ultimately be 52 miles long.

We need off-road paths to encourage biking and walking. Sure, we have spent millions on marking highways with bicycle lanes and they are used by many people, but to encourage families to bike, wouldn't you rather the trails be off-road and safe from traffic?
