Regarding the story "Toughening up NY cruelty laws" [News, April 25], the picture of Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice holding a rescued dog while State Sen. Charles Fuschillo (R-Merrick) looked on is absolutely disturbing. This is a major concern to our district attorney?

While it's absolutely necessary to have laws to protect innocent animals against sick individuals who would harm them, it's also necessary to remember that humans come first. Humans who are the residents of Nassau County, who pay the district attorney's salary and who voted for her, deserve tough laws against violent crimes, drug offenses and larcenies, including Ponzi schemes. These crimes cost us all in the long run.

We should remember that the district attorney is in a dispute over whether she violated a no-pet rule at her co-op by having a dog.
