I must have read this editorial about 50 times and still couldn't believe what I was reading ["Don't let polluters off easy," July 5].

"Now a proposed new [Department of Environmental Conservation] policy looks to harmonize those goals, by encouraging some firms to audit their own environmental practices and report their violations to the DEC." You have got to be kidding. Do you really think any company in its right mind is going to turn itself in to be fined and then be monitored by the DEC?

Why doesn't the DEC do its job and not try and dump its work onto others?
