The article "Residents protest firing of museum director" [News, Feb. 18] missed the point of the rally organized by our group.
Held in front of the locked doors of the museum, the rally intended to provide much-needed information to the community about the status of the museum, and to announce that the Friends of Tackapausha organization is very much interested in accepting a proposal to partner with the county in operating it.
The 125 people who attended heard speakers -- members of local civic, economic and environmental organizations -- express strong attachment to the preserve and museum, which has served the county well for 62 years. We appreciated that representatives of the county's Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums attended and answered questions.
The layoff of the popular director, Wendy Albin, was a blow to the community. The Friends of Tackapausha want to step into the breach and work with the county in running programs and events that will continue to educate visitors about the unique natural history of our Island.
The Friends believe the museum and preserve should remain under the control of the county and not be privatized. We will work toward the day when a qualified county employee can again be director of this wonderful facility.
