Letter: Does spraying really wipe out mosquitoes?

A lot of money is spent on mosquito spraying across New York and Long Island [“Subways, parks treated to fight Zika,” News, Aug. 3]. It’s clear that government officials want people to feel secure and want to show that something is being done to combat the spread of the West Nile and Zika viruses.
I have my doubts that this spraying eliminates these insects. Can anyone truly expect the mosquitoes living in roof gutters of houses to be killed by a truck traveling down a neighborhood road emitting a fog of insecticide?
The public has a right to know whether all the tax dollars spent are actually helping the situation.
