Letter: Don't borrow for Smithtown roads

In a time when every day we read another story regarding the fiscal irresponsibility of county governments, state governments, federal government and the governments of foreign countries, I was surprised to read that it is Newsday's opinion that Smithtown should abandon the fiscal responsibility it has shown throughout the entire tenure of Town Supervisor Pat Vecchio and borrow $10 million for road repairs ["For Smithtown, a frugal road to ruin," Editorial, March 8].
Could that money be found in the present budget? Budgeted dollars for snow removal couldn't have been used this winter.
Working within your budget should be expected of our elected officials. Borrowing should be a last resort.
