Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco’s op-ed, “How to restrain crisis of confidence” [Opinion, Jan. 15], accurately represents my opinions and concerns about local law enforcement. His recommendation of nonpartisan elections to help restore the confidence of the public is paramount.

I do have one question, though: Why are law enforcement officials, such as district attorney and sheriff, even elected at all? These positions should be filled by the most qualified people available and vetted by unbiased professionals in the law enforcement community.
