It's a shame that a much-needed plan to keep interest rates low for student loans will probably not get passed ["Make students a priority," Editorial, May 11]. During times like these, any assistance we can give to struggling young adult students should be implemented.

By doubling the interest rates to 6.8 percent, not only would we be plunging these students into a greater debt, but we would also be kicking them while they are down. Without jobs, many of these prospective graduates will not be able to repay these loans.

If it's really the government's responsibility to help people, it should find a way to keep the burden off those who have no means of carrying it.
