I was surprised to read about Legis. William J. Lindsay III’s proposal to reduce the number of districts that make up the Suffolk County Legislature from 18 to 13 [“Call to trim Suffolk’s legislature,” News, Nov. 16].

As a candidate for the legislature in 1981, I felt that my district was small enough for me to be able on foot to meet most of the people, lessening the need for large campaign contributions.

Given the appalling effect that money has on politics, it’s refreshing to have a body where the elected officials can free themselves from special interests and work strictly for the interests of the people.

Let’s hope that this proposal goes nowhere.
