Letter: Trump must speak more carefully

So Donald Trump likes guys who start wars and simply annex areas — Ukraine, Crimea — and threaten Eastern Europe with nuclear missiles if U.S. defensive systems are installed [“Trump reckless on Russia,” Editorial, July 28].
Trump also threatened to ignore NATO alliances that have kept Europe free for nearly 70 years. These kinds of signals can start wars.
The disastrous U.S. stance in 1950, covering defense lines in the Pacific against communism, neglected to include South Korea. Mere months later, North Korea, with Russia’s full knowledge and consent, invaded South Korea, believing Americans would not intervene. Signals in foreign policy have real impacts.
