Letter: Elected trustees should speak up
Three cheers to writer Michael Cohen, former Brentwood schools superintendent, for exposing the problem of nepotism and cronyism on school boards ["Curb nepotism, cronyism on ed boards," Opinion, Oct. 11].
For years, I've fought with school board members and library board members who don't understand the role of a trustee. I don't understand the power trip some board members take when they win a seat.
These problems aren't new but no one pays attention. As a board member of the Elmont Public Library, I've been told that we shouldn't speak out but instead work as one board and resolve our issues in-house. I say no more silence, and I urge other board members to speak out, too.
The system needs to be fixed to focus on taxpayers and children.
