Letter: Farmingdale needs better downtown

To say that I am disappointed by the Farmingdale Village board's decision to deny hookah lounge Mystique Gardens a liquor license is a huge understatement ["No liquor license for hookah bar," News, Aug. 8]. With all the shuttered storefronts on Main Street, you would think village officials would be eager for new businesses to thrive.
I look at towns such as Huntington, where people of all ages enjoy what a diverse group of businesses offers in an entertaining downtown. I wonder why we can't have the same thing in Farmingdale. Sure, the village has a few restaurants and bars, but it is hardly as bustling or appealing (at least to me) as Huntington.
People wonder why young people leave Long Island. The lack of affordable housing is partly to blame. But take it from a native Long Islander who is only two years out of college -- decisions like this by local government are definitely part of the problem as well.
