It amazes me that politicians attack our president with a passion that could benefit all if it were directed toward doing their jobs [“President’s haters never miss a beat,” Opinion, Jan. 10].

It suggests to me something more than different political views. Commentary is shared via social media without any confirmation of accuracy. Even worse is the fact that they criticize President Barack Obama’s ideas and actions without proposing alternatives.

I was taught that if you criticize, you should suggest a better approach or a solution. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places, but has the Republican Party taken this approach in the last seven years?

The response of Reps. Pete King (R-Seaford) and Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) to the State of the Union address was characteristic of the behavior President Barack Obama was speaking about when he mentioned rancor and dysfunctional political discourse [“For LI reps, reaction is tied to party,” News, Jan. 13].

The president, in a manner, acknowledged his shortcomings with the reference to Franklin Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. But he also definitively described how America continues to be great. King and Zeldin would fall into that category Obama described as people likely to deny the existence of Sputnik.

Congressmen, look up! Pull your heads from the sand! Stop lamenting about your past so you can see the opportunities ahead. The release of the U.S. sailors who were detained in Iran confirms the president’s approach. Iran acted properly in this incident because of the new relationship.

The world is changing. Please either lead together or get out of the way!
