The Democrats' new catchphrase is "common sense" gun laws ["Obama's new push on guns," News, Sept. 23]. The only problem is that common sense in Washington is very rare.

Guns have been around for hundreds of years. It is the mass murdering of innocent unarmed citizens by civilians with guns that has recently increased. This increase in violent behavior is a direct result of the increased exposure to violent movies and video games.

We cannot locate and cure everyone with mental health issues, but we can limit their exposure to gratuitously violent videos. Commonsense legislation should first include the banning of these movies and video games.

Also, I question whether our government is demanding background checks on every individual given assault rifles and ammunition in Syria, Egypt, Iraq or Afghanistan. Our government does not demand background checks on the surplus military assault rifles and ammunition it gives freely to our so-called allies -- only on American citizens.
