Letter: Is Sandy recovery effort a practical joke?

I have to wonder whether Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s Office of Storm Recovery is filming a special episode of Candid Camera or Government Gone Wild [“$59M in Sandy debt,” News, Feb. 20].
As residents of Long Beach whose home was severely damaged by superstorm Sandy, my wife and I hoped that New York Rising might provide us with some relief.
We applied and were denied an award, because they said that we already received a large charitable contribution for the repair of our home. We did not. We cleared that up.
More than three years, five case managers and a modest award later, we were then advised that we owe money back for failure to repair our crawl space. Here is the kicker: We have no crawl space; we live on a slab.
I’m wondering when the governor is going to stop by and say, “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera!” Or, better yet, “Smile, you don’t owe us anything!”
