Letter: ISIS illustrates Middle East complexity
The horrific acts of terror committed by the Islamic State group in Paris have justifiably angered people worldwide .
Some are calling for U.S. ground forces to be deployed by the thousands to Syria and Iraq. While a massive troop deployment might make citizens feel that something significant is being done to secure our nation and perhaps exact revenge, history has shown us that it's not this simple.
The U.S. war in Iraq following Sept. 11 illustrates this perfectly. It's far easier to topple a regime than it is to create a stable sovereign state afterward. The emergence of ISIS in a Saddam-less Iraq illuminates this.
Eradicating ISIS from the Middle East will require a broad coalition of nations, consisting of more than just our Western allies. If Muslim-dominated nations don't participate, our intervention will be perceived as nothing more than another chapter of Western imperialism.
