Letter: LIRR needs to step up service

In May, the number of LIRR riders went up by 4 percent to 7,169,078 from 6,892,954 a year earlier, railroad officials said Monday. (July 2, 2012) Credit: Nancy Borowick
I'm glad the economy is doing better and the Long Island Rail Road has more riders ["LIRR ridership up 4%," News, July 3]. But the LIRR continues to be inept at providing decent service.
Recently my two sons were supposed to take a train at 11:15 a.m. from Hicksville and connect at Penn Station to go to New Jersey. The Hicksville train was late, and the reason given was overcrowding.
I'm not sure of the reason for overcrowding. The LIRR should have immediately brought more trains into service if it had any indication of overcrowding. More riders equals more problems.
