Teacher pension costs will drop significantly next year, with lower rates expected to save more than $100 million in Nassau and Suffolk counties alone, officials said. Credit: Newsday / John Paraskevas

The article "Drop in teacher pension costs" [News, Nov. 3] projects a decrease in teacher pension contribution rates to 11.75 percent in the 2016-17 school year. The article states, "any savings in pension costs would give local districts a little extra financial wiggle room."

I wonder whether school districts could use that wiggle room to once again bolster reserve funds, which I would oppose. Instead, districts should reduce school taxes, which already account for more than 60 percent of Long Island homeowners' property taxes.
