Residents of the Merrick area of the Town of Hempstead have been complaining about their privately owned water company ["Town mulls buying water company," News, Jan. 12]. They claim that their water is very expensive.

Newsday recently reported that the Town of Hempstead is working on a plan to create a public authority to operate the water supply in that area. Such public ownership, it is said, will provide purer water at less cost. The Five Towns area of the Town of Hempstead has similar problems with its privately owned water company, Long Island American Water

Local government should ensure that all residents have access to pure drinking water. All taxpayers must be treated equally. Government cannot accord special privileges or beneficial services to areas housing voters who consistently support certain candidates for public office, or certain political parties.

One authority should be able to operate all water supplies in the Town of Hempstead.
