Letter: Many telemarketing calls are scams

The best way to report nagging phone calls from telemarketers is to email or call the Federal Trade Commission ["Nagging calls are a source of irritation," Letters, Dec. 2]. I have done so several times and have learned that many of these calls are scams, especially those offering medical alert buttons or repairs to an "infected" computer.
The national "do not call" list is ineffective because crooked telemarketers ignore it; honest businesses honor it. Obviously these scammers are successful, or there wouldn't be so many of these calls.
We really need tougher laws against these dishonest callers, but the government is too slow to act. If people stop being gullible, and these callers are less successful, maybe they will go away.
