"New system profits firms" [News, Aug. 16], about the firms that help taxpayers grive their tax assessments, failed to clearly explain the large savings realized by Nassau County when it began to reduce assessments before taxes are paid, thus eliminating the need for refunds by the county.

This savings -- which in the past was a subsidy to other taxing jurisdictions -- well justifies County Executive Edward Mangano's plan. Sometimes politicians get it right.
