Letter: Not hunting deer will leave them to starve

The Jan. 8 letter “Deer will be killed to save plants?” illustrates the disconnect from the laws of nature embodied by most so-called animal rights activists.
We’ve created lush suburban landscapes free of natural predators on Long Island. Meanwhile, the public attitude toward wildlife has become sentimentalized and unrealistic.
The ecosystem has become disrupted as some opportunistic species, such as deer, raccoons and Canada geese, breed beyond the capacity of the habitat to sustain them. White-tailed deer seriously affect native plants if the deer numbers aren’t managed. Then, the deer starve.
The letter writer has an agenda, and it’s not pro–nature; it’s anti-hunter.
