Letter: Obama, UN, Israel and Syria

The sad fact is that the United Nations and Israel's neighbors are standing idly by, watching Iran issue lie after lie about developing nuclear energy for "peaceful purposes" ["Iran's response to EU sanctions," Business, Feb. 20].
I suppose nuclear weapons could be used to remove the cancer that is Israel (according to Iran's ranting about Israel being the cause of all the Middle East troubles).
Then there is the matter of Syria, and again the United Nations and surrounding nations have been too silent, as thousands of innocent citizens are being slaughtered by President Bashar Assad and his gang. President Barack Obama's leadership leaves a lot to be desired.
A Richard Nixon or a Ronald Reagan would have gone to that region to at least try to talk some sense into these evildoers. Times have changed, and the situation has worsened. Doing nothing is dangerous. Leading with a firm and strong hand would gain us the admiration of free nations around the world.
Can anyone do anything to stem the coming catastrophe?
