The article about the escape from upstate Dannemora prison reminded me of an idea about how to save money by subcontracting the imprisonment of real bad guys to other countries [" 'Sophisticated plan,' " News, June 8]. I'm only thinking of the economics; the morality and legality I leave to the philosophers and politicians.

Let's assume it costs about $30,000 a year to keep a convict at Dannemora. I'm sure we could find some faraway country willing to take each prisoner at $15,000 a year.

Let's face it, you're not going to get too many "Shawshank Redemption"-style escapes from Novosibirsk, Russia, or Norfolk Island, Australia.
