I could not agree more with the letter about kids and bedtime ["Parents must put kids to bed earlier," Sept. 9].

The real answer does lie with the parents. What makes Education Secretary Arne Duncan think that delaying school openings would be the answer to more sleep for children?

So much emphasis is put on improving our schools and teachers, and rightfully so. However, I don't see the politicians, or anyone else, talking about the need to provide resources for parents who are devoid of parenting skills. Many teachers and aides put in countless hours of work to help their students, while some parents do very little. Without parental guidance and discipline, many of these children cause distractions and problems in the classroom.

Teachers and other school employees deserve respect and decent wages, along with support from involved parents.
