Letter: Pay raise for judges, lawmakers isn’t fair

New York State judges want to be first in line for hefty 16 percent raises to more than $200,000 a year, which could soon be followed by similar raises for legislators and the governor [“Raises for state judges aired,” News, Dec. 1].
Meanwhile, New York taxpayers manage with a comparatively meager full-time wage, averaging less than $50,000 a year.
It brings to mind that famous quote by Squealer in George Orwell’s “Animal Farm.”
“Comrades!” he cried. “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? . . . We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organization of this farm depend on us. Day and night we are watching over your welfare. It is for YOUR sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples.”

Our mixed-breed
dog is a great friend
While a recent letter writer is correct to encourage prospective dog owners to rescue animals from shelters, she is wrong to condemn those who choose an alternate route [“Don’t encourage ‘designer’ dogs,” Dec. 1].
With proper vetting, one can find caring and responsible breeders and wonderful pets. Our family’s labradoodle has a fantastic temperament and doesn’t shed, which is good for my allergies and lack of interest in constant vacuuming. He possesses all the amazing traits of both breeds: He’s gentle, loyal and as close to perfect as one could want in a furry friend. Several neighbors who also have similar “hybrids” are nothing but pleased with their dogs.
I have had rescue dogs in my life and have had great success with them as well. There is room for both in this world.
