I was disturbed to read the profile of the Bohemia-based owner of five businesses, Karin M. Caro ["Blending marketing and busy mothering," Business, Aug. 1]. Caro says she appreciates that a wealth of job applicants makes it inexpensive to hire an "unbelievable staff at a very low rate." In effect, she is admitting that because of the bad economy, there are more unemployed people on Long Island who are desperate for work and can't be choosy about what they're paid.

All job seekers fear that they can't expect to be paid what they're worth in a bad economy, and this story confirms that suspicion.

It's practices like that that keep us in a bad economy longer. When employers underpay their employees, Long Island residents must continue to pinch pennies, meaning less revenue for local service providers, restaurants and retailers.
