The National Collegiate Athletic Association is quick to impose sanctions and penalties for academic fraud, illegal benefits from agents and recruiting violations ["Penn State report," News, July 13].

In view of the latest revelations regarding the Jerry Sandusky scandal, let's hope that the NCAA's infractions committee imposes the harshest of penalties on Penn State, including the suspension of its football program, loss of scholarships and ouster from the Big Ten Conference.

The Penn State faculty failed to put the safety and welfare of children on campus over the football program, and the university must suffer the consequences for its years of knowledge and total disregard of the unspeakable criminal acts and subsequent cover-up.
