Letter: Police don't enforce speed limits
Regarding "Getting a bit too intimate on the Expressway" [Opinion, Sept. 26], I am a retired Teamster semitrailer driver. I drove for 34 years throughout the five boroughs, Nassau County, Suffolk County and portions of New Jersey and Connecticut.
Tailgating has reached terrible proportions, placing the public at risk. In general, law enforcement allows drivers to exceed the posted speed limits. The result is that the tailgating has grown exponentially. Imagine driving the posted speed limit, and a vehicle behind you fills your rearview mirrors.
This really hurts on local roads, where adults and children are walking. Portable electronic speed indicators placed by law enforcement haven't resulted in reduced speeds. Drivers seem to ignore them.
A major enforcement of the posted speed limits should be in place. Imagine how much money would be raised.
