Letter: Politicians pander on Common Core

The column "Stop Common Core is a wasted vote" [Opinion, Oct. 9] hit the nail on the head. The myopic and misguided naysayers who want to do away with the higher education standards, which is the basis for Common Core, just don't realize that our students rank near the bottom in the basic disciplines, such as math, language arts, etc.
Not that everything associated with Common Core is perfect. Admittedly the way it was introduced had its flaws. It is worth noting that politicos running for office in this upcoming election jumped on the naysayers' bandwagon, purely to get their votes!
But if our education system doesn't prepare our students to compete on an equal level with their European and Asian counterparts, woe unto us and this country!
